Since 2003, the County of San Diego Public Health Services Community Epidemiology Division has successfully utilized its NEDSS-based electronic reportable diseases surveillance system to ensure the capacity to prepare for and respond to acute communicable disease events, including day-to-day public health incidents, regional outbreaks, and a bioterrorism attack. During this workshop, a San Diego County representative will highlight his department’s experience with developing and advancing electronic disease surveillance through utilization, automation, integration, and collaboration. Atlas Development Corporation representatives will conduct a live interactive demonstration of the system that serves San Diego County and other states and counties that use the Atlas PHIN suite.

Mass emergency evacuation and transportation of non-ambulatory patients present challenges that can be overcome with proper planning and equipment. During this workshop, presenters will share examples of health care facility evacuations; outline principles of evacuation planning; discuss equipment for mass casualty transportation; and explore the roles of local, state, and federal agencies. Presenters will also discuss the successes and failures of health care facility evacuations and lessons learned.

This workshop will examine the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices expanded recommendations for school-aged children. Participants will explore strategies to address the unmet medical needs related to influenza immunization, learn about options to increase access to school-aged children in order to increase immunization compliance, identify potential partnering opportunities that can improve influenza vaccination rates among school-aged children, and discuss approaches to educating and immunizing school-aged children and their family members. The workshop will also provide feedback on current educational program initiatives (e.g., Spread the Word, Not the Flu) that have been implemented in schools across the country.
