The FBI provides resources to public health to combat the threat of bioterrorism, both nationally at FBI Headquarters, and locally in 56 field offices. This session will educate participants about the resources, and the FBI-CDC Joint Criminal-Epidemiological Investigations model, and will provide valuable reference and educational materials.

CDC is exploring an alternative method of antiviral distribution and dispensing during an influenza pandemic that leverages pharmaceutical distributors and community pharmacies. Understanding the alternative model, its impact, and the role of state and local public health could improve access to antivirals during an influenza pandemic.

The explosion of social media has changed the way in which those in the public health field must look at risk communication and information sharing, especially in times of emergency. In these situations social media can, and should, be used to communicate accurate information immediately to as many people as possible. The interactive exercise included in this training will provide a look at a real life event, and integrate the use of social media into the response.

Critical Incident analysis and reporting can facilitate deeper analysis of particular incidents and provide a means to share lessons. Through didactic presentations and case examples led by public health professionals, this workshop will introduce the concepts and methods for critical incident analysis as part of ongoing system improvement efforts in public health emergency preparedness.

Community recovery from disaster is a complex and lengthy process that could be expedited with improved pre-planning. During this workshop, RAND and NACCHO’s Project Public Health Ready (PPHR) will help participants begin to develop a recovery plan or integrate recovery plan elements and indicators into their existing emergency plan. They will also highlight opportunities for future technical assistance on preparedness planning.

This workshop will explain how to use Drexel’s Public Health Risk Assessment Tool to assess a community’s risks and vulnerabilities, including the needs of at-risk populations. Participants will learn how to interpret and use the results in order to inform public health preparedness planning agendas.

This session will build skills to identify and meet access and functional needs of a shelter population through a didactic presentation and an immersion scenario. A shelter operation simulation will allow participants to solve multiple injects drawn from real disaster situations encountered in shelters.
